The Homepage Section You've Been Meaning to Add
Your homepage is the page most visitors see first, and it's usually the one owners are least willing to touch. Adding a section to it has meant a developer, a theme edit, or giving up on the idea. That's no longer the trade. Describe the section you want in a sentence, let BD Butler build it on a test page, and drop it onto your homepage when you're happy with it.
In the video above, Sergey builds a three-panel workout routines section for a fitness site from a single prompt, saves it as a widget, and places it on the homepage. Every step happens in the admin area you already use, and the live homepage doesn't change until the last click.
Why This Matters for Your Website
- The page everyone lands on stops being off-limits. No theme file, no developer, no waiting for a quote.
- You experiment somewhere safe. The section gets built and refined on a test page, so nothing visitors can see is at risk while you're deciding.
- Build once, place anywhere. Saved as a widget, the same shortcode works on a landing page, a category page or the homepage.
- Ten custom content areas on the homepage. Stack a few sections, reorder them, or swap one out when your season changes.
- Changes stay in plain English. Ask for different colors, tighter spacing or a fourth panel — you never need to know which line of CSS to edit.
What It Takes, Start to Finish
- Build it on a test page. Go to My Content » Web Page Builder, create a test page, open BD Butler and describe the section you want.
- Accept, save, adjust. Accept and save the changes, then edit anything you like directly on that test page.
- Turn it into a widget. Toolbox » Widget Manager » New Widget, and give it a name you'll recognise in six months — "Homepage Routines" beats "Widget 4".
- Copy the code across. Open Code View on the test page and paste the HTML into the widget's HTML tab, then the CSS from the Advanced tab and the JavaScript into theirs. Save.
- Place it. Copy the widget's shortcode, then go to Design Settings » Homepage, choose Custom Content under the content to display, click edit settings, paste the shortcode and save.
- Refresh the live site. From the dashboard, click Refresh Live Site and load your homepage.
The prompt that produced the section in the video is one sentence and a piece of housekeeping. The last part matters — it tells BD Butler to build on the page itself, which is what makes the code easy to copy afterwards:
Showcase three types of workout routines. Make it stylish, dynamic and modern, and make sure to create these directly on the current page, not as a widget and not as a separate object.
A Few Ways to Use It
- Directory site? Three category panels on the homepage, each one pointing at the search your visitors run most.
- Association or chamber? A member benefits strip, or what's coming up on the events calendar, right where members look.
- Selling sponsorships? A sponsor row on the homepage is straightforward to build and straightforward to charge for.
- Promoting something for a month? Place the widget, then clear the custom content area when the promotion ends. The widget stays saved for next time.
Everything here lives in three menus: My Content » Web Page Builder to build, Toolbox » Widget Manager to save, and Settings » Design Settings » Homepage to place.
