This article isn’t about theory. It’s about what actually works — especially if you’re starting from zero or very early traction.
You don’t need to implement all the strategies at once. Think of them as building blocks. Start where you are, stack the next layer, and momentum follows.
Strategy 1: Get Your First 100 Members Before Monetizing Hard
This is a strong foundation for a high-growth directory.
To create an environment where people are eager to pay, your directory first needs:
- Activity
- Listings
- Proof that “people like me are here”

People are happy to pay to unlock things that:

- Higher placement in search results
- Priority or featured exposure

This strategy is often ignored — and that’s a mistake.
You can:
- Allow one sponsor per category
- Charge a flat monthly fee
- Place them prominently

Is it perfect? No. Is it enough to get your first few payments? Absolutely.
Strategy 6: Start With Suppliers First (Commission Before Memberships)

- A family member runs that business
- A friend or colleague is in that industry
- You personally used a service or hired a vendor
- In one way or another, you personally experienced the pain — and felt the need to solve it
You already know someone on the supply side. That’s your unfair advantage.

Instead of charging suppliers upfront:
- Start with a simple, verbal agreement
- Tell them honestly: “I’m building this platform. If I bring you customers, you pay me a commission.”
No contracts. No pressure.
That first supplier can often introduce you to:

Very quickly, you have a supply base. Now your only focus is getting customers — monetization is already built in. This strategy works in most niches, especially early on.
Strategy 7: Monetize Leads, Not Just Listings
Leads are more valuable than profiles. Many members are happy to pay for:

- High-intent customers

This single habit played a major role in building my multi-million businesses. Today, email marketing is easier than ever.
A simple daily system
- Use ChatGPT to find 10–20 businesses in a city which has 20-100 Google Reviews and at least one email address visible.
- Prompt: “Get me 10+ [niche] businesses in [city, state]. Each should have 20+ reviews on google and at least one email address visible.”
- Optimize the prompt for your needs.
- Put those business details in a spreadsheet/google sheet.
Every day:
- Send a few personalized emails
- Track follow-ups manually
- Spend 30–60 minutes total
You don’t need automation software at this stage. Manual, honest outreach works.
